• Simple Principles of Purity

I Timothy 5.1-2.

We have clearly established that sex outside of the Biblical covenant of marriage is sinful. So the question remains, since we cannot enjoy intercourse, what can we do? What is legitimate behavior between men and women, and between a man and a woman who love each other?

The Word of God is clear. Men are to treat the older women as mothers; the younger as sisters, “with absolute purity”. 1 Timothy 5:1-2 (NASB).

    Do Not Defraud

If you are married, or single and in a romantic relationship, do not defraud one another. 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 (NASB)

    Single Christians:
    do not stir up
    any desire you cannot
    legitimately fulfill.

Most commentators and counselors agree this means do not stir up any desire you cannot legitimately fulfill. If the hot and heavy intimacies are reserved for marriage, there will be less danger of immorality. Spend less time exploring each other’s erogenous zones and more time enjoying and developing a solid friendship. Believe me, in the years to come you will be glad you did. Yes, marriage includes the sublime blessings of sex, but more time is spent out of bed than in.

And if you are married do not defraud or deprive each other by withholding sexual relations,

“except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again . . .” 1 Corinthians 7:5 (ESV)

Whether married or single, simple love for each other and obedience to the Word of God will keep us out of compromising situations and save us from the serious consequences of sexual sin.
