• Sexual Sin is Shocking

It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and . . . you have become arrogant and have not mourned . . .” 1 Corinthians 5:1-2 (NASB)

St. Paul was shocked at the sexual sin among the Corinthians. He was even more horrified that the church was treating it with casual nonchalance. So, what would be his reaction to our attitude today?

    No Shame

    A Sense of Shame.

The Bible foretold a day when people would have no sense of shame. They would lose the ability to blush.

Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they shall be overthrown, says the Lord. Jeremiah 8:12 (NASB)

There was a day when it was hard to convince unwed pregnant young women that with heartfelt repentance and a time of restoration there was still hope for their lives. Today we have to work hard to convince some of them that immorality is shameful, shocking, and destructive. There is very little fear of God. They don’t ever see it as sinful. They casually list their FaceBook relationship status as “complicated.”

Baby, your life may be complicated but your relationship isn’t. Sir, if you are living together, if you are having sex before marriage, you are in sexual sin. You have to stop. It is just that simple. Stop sinning. Stop making excuses. Stop now. You may have kids together, you may live under the same roof, and your finances may be intertwined. Sin always complicates life. But the solution is not complicated. Get out of his or her bed and stop sinning.

Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge. Hebrews 13:4 (NASB)

    Stop playing house.
    Grow up.
    Get married.

Contrary to current cultural norms there is no “equivalent to marriage” status in the Kingdom of God. You are either married or you are not. No matter how long you have been together, married is married and nothing else is. Your private “covenants” have no merit and common-law is contrary to the Law of God. Stop playing house. Grow up. Get married. And as for serial monogamy, there is no virtue to only be in sexual sin with one person at a time.

    Sex is Supreme?

    Abstinence is mocked.
    Celibacy is scorned.
    Sex is supreme.

In the ancient world they worshipped the gods of sexuality. Every city had a temple on a high spot where worshippers would go and copulate with temple prostitutes, both male and female. Today we again have elevated sexual pleasure and fulfillment beyond its rightful place and we worship at the altar of immorality. We deny ourselves no pleasures or perversions to the destruction of morality and marriage. Abstinence is mocked. Celibacy is scorned. Sex is supreme. And at the same time young people have come to believe sex is no big deal. They are just “hooking up.” “Hey Mom, everyone is doing it.” If they manage to refrain from intercourse everything else is fair game.

For this is the will of God, your sanctification, that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; 1 Thessalonians 4:3 (NASB)

Elevating sex beyond its rightful place and purpose and expression in our lives robs it of dignity, honor, purity and ultimately the depths of pleasure for which it was created. Sex within marriage is holy, pure, and undefiled; sex outside of its God ordained context is an abomination.

God have mercy on us all.
