Red Heads ~ Gingers
Science tells us that 1 – 2% of us have red hair, and that it is caused by a recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation in the MC1R protein. Whatever causes it, it can appear quite beautiful. Just think of Julia Roberts and you know what I mean.
In the Bible the Hebrew word usually translated "ruddy" or "reddish-brown" was used to describe both Esau and David, so it is reasonable to think that both these men had red hair.
So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is he.” 1 Samuel 16:12 (NASB)
When the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, with a handsome appearance. 1 Samuel 17:42 (NASB)
Now the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau. Genesis 25:25 (NASB)
In religious art Mary Magdalene is often pictured with red hair, but that is the result of conjecture and tradition, not scripture.
In popular culture red heads are thought to be hot tempered. Of Anne Shirley, the redheaded heroine of the popular Anne of Green Gables, it was said that "her temper matches her hair".
Redheads have also been presumed to be highly sexed. There is no scientific evidence to support that they are so blessed, but one can only hope.
